Taxpayers in France may notice a sum has been taken out of their bank accounts today, however there is no cause for concern.
The charge – if you received it – is related to your income tax declaration from this spring (for income from 2023).
The charge will be debited to direction générale des Finances publiques with the subtitle Solde impôt revenus 2023.
People who still had over €300 to pay after the declaration have their deduction spread over four monthly payments debited between September and December, with this being the second.
The final two payments will be taken out on November 25 and December 27.
Those with less than €300 to pay will have had the tax debited in a single instalment on September 26.
You can find how much tax you had left to pay – if any – on your avis d’imposition, available through your personal space on the French tax site, an email sent to you earlier in the year, or if you requested it, a paper form.
As the government can take money from your bank for taxes – or provide a refund if you have overpaid – making sure that they have your correct bank account details is important.
You can check which bank details the authorities have in your personal space section on the French tax site.
Making monthly tax payments
The spreading of income tax payments is automatic, depending on how much you owe, however you can opt to pay property taxes in France, as well as the CFE business tax (if eligible) in monthly payments if you wish.
Requests to pay in monthly instalments for both taxe d’habitation and taxe foncière must be done by December 15 of the year before, so there is still time to set it up for 2025 and onwards (you only need to make the request once).
They can be spread over 10 equal payments between January and October.
However, if you forget this first deadline, you can still make the request up to December 31, which will see payments spread between February and October, with an additional catch-up payment for what you missed in January.
You can make the request in your personal space on the French tax site, by clicking Paiements and then Adhérer au prélèvement mensuel pour le prélèvement de mes impôts.
You can make requests to pay the CFE business tax through your professional account on the tax site.
